Senior Researcher / Associate Professor Researcher (Grade SR/AP)
Institute for Water Research

The Institute for Water Research invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

Main Objectives

Research is the main focus, and teaching is not a core function. Where the researchers are on contract, raising funds for their employment, contract research shall be regarded as equivalent to more traditional forms of
research.

In assessing the candidate’s scholarship for promotion, consideration will be given to the individual's track record. While disciplinary differences are considered, the candidate must demonstrate a standing within the
discipline based on their research and student research. This could mean that the individual has demonstrated
leadership, made a major contribution to research projects, and been the lead author on publications or has
demonstrated a consistent individual contribution in several publications throughout their academic career.

In addition, a Professor and Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in teaching and learning,
research, and community engagement and contribute towards the institution's governance. This leadership
contribution of the Professor should be evidenced at the departmental, Faculty and Institutional levels.

The Requirements
 
Senior Researcher:
  • At least a PhD in Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Geohydrology, or related disciplines.
  • Evidence of a national reputation as a leading scholar in the field of hydrological research or a related field of research.
  • Demonstrated experience in securing external research funding.
  • Research supervision of at least Master’s degrees to completion required. Supervision at the PhD level will be an added advantage.
  • A good and sustained publication record in the field of Hydrology, or Hydrogeology, Geohydrology, or a related field of research.
  • Evidence of attendance and presentation at local and preferably international conferences.
  • A record of working with policymakers and practitioners in the water sector.
  • Proven record of research administration, leadership, and people management.
  • Demonstrated participation in collaborative research
  • projects and led own research projects.

Associate Professor Researcher:
  • At least a PhD in Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Geohydrology, or related disciplines.
  • Evidence of national and emerging international reputation as a leading scholar in the field of hydrological research or a related field of research.
  • A sustained and extensive publication record in appropriate scholarly and accredited journals. With evidence of lead authorship on some of the papers.
  • A sustained track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at the Master’s and PhD level.
  • Evidence of transdisciplinary research practice and of working across multiple disciplines.
  • A sustained record of attendance and presentation in local and preferably international conferences.
  • A record of working with policymakers and practitioners in the water sector.
  • Proven record of research administration, leadership, and people management.
  • Demonstrate participation in collaborative research projects and leading own research projects.
  • A proven record of attracting external research grants from local and international funding agencies.
  • A proven record of leading large research grants and a proven ability to manage donor budgets effectively.
  • Experience in designing and leading inter-cross and transdisciplinary projects.

Basic Pensionable Salary per annum:                        R742 411
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately):           R960 928

Remuneration per annum (Grade AP):
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum:                        R887 318
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately):           R1 141 001
